Dubai continues to focus on innovation and expansion with an unprecedented project: Al Maktoum Airport, currently the city’s second airport, is set to become the largest in the world. With a $34 billion investment, the United Arab Emirates plan to expand the airport to accommodate 260 million passengers, far surpassing any other international hub.
The expansion will make the airport five times larger than Dubai International Airport, which in 2023 became the first in the world to exceed 87 million passengers. According to Dubai’s ruler, Mohammed bin Rashid, the new airport will feature 400 boarding gates and five parallel runways, enabling an unprecedented level of air traffic management. In the coming years, all operations from Dubai International Airport will be relocated to Al Maktoum.
Beyond the airport expansion, the project includes the development of an entire city around the airport, located in southern Dubai. This new urban area will be designed to accommodate up to one million residents and will serve as a hub for leading global companies in logistics and air transportation.
This project reaffirms Dubai’s ambition to solidify its position as a global aviation hub and a key center for international mobility. With the goal of becoming “the world’s airport”, Dubai is set to redefine the future of air travel.
